Mentor Spotlight: Dr. Jessica Price-Seelow, DVM
This month’s spotlight is on the inspiring Dr. Jessica Price-Seelow, DVM. Jessica works with our mentors in the MentorVet Leap program and has wonderful insight on staying the course. She is passionate about teaching other vets how to remain encouraged and create healthy work environments. Read below about her and all the things she is passionate about!
Jessica, tell us a little bit about your career journey. What do you currently do in veterinary medicine and how did you end up here?
My story is that of the underdog. I interned and worked at my current place of employment until I purchased it in 2015. I was told that I would never get into veterinary school and here I am now owning my practice as a solo practitioner!
Why did you choose to be involved with MentorVet?
I wanted to be able to help other veterinarians who needed advice or just another veterinarian to talk to.
Will you share an example of something you and your mentee have discussed?
We did work on how to deal with difficult cases and difficult clients. We also touched upon business ownership and balancing work and home life.
What is the most enjoyable aspect of being a mentor?
Feeling like I am making a difference.
What is one thing that you have learned through your time mentoring for MentorVet?
That my story and experience can really help another veterinarian.
What is the best piece of advice that you have ever received from a mentor or the best piece of advice that you have ever given?
You need to be able to set and then hold your boundaries so that you are not 100% controlled by your profession.
Would you recommend volunteering as a mentor for MentorVet to other veterinarians?
Yes. You are really helping another peer even if it is just a listening ear which I feel we all need. Veterinarians are notorious for not asking for help.
Anything else you would like to share about yourself so we can get to know you?
I own a cat rescue. I love yarn and all things crochet or knitting. I'm a mom to 3 children - 12, 8 and 6 years old.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us, Dr. Price-Seelow!
