Mentor Spotlight: Dr. Jessica Larson, DVM

We’re lucky to have some amazing mentors in our MentorVet community! One of these mentors is the wonderful - Dr. Jessica Larson, DVM! Jessica is a board-certified small animal internal medicine specialist. She’s the kind of mentor who goes above and beyond, connecting with her mentees in a way that makes them feel truly supported and understood. She’s passionate about helping the younger generation of vets and below offers some great wisdom for others in this field!

Jessica, tell us a little bit about your career journey. What do you currently do in veterinary medicine and how did you end up here?

I practiced in large specialty hospitals for the first part of my journey. Then I moved into an educational industry position. Most recently I am a new business owner with an internal medicine consulting and teaching focus.

Why did you choose to be involved with MentorVet?

I enjoy interacting with folks and I especially cherished the times I was a mentor for rotating interns and I wanted to take that forward into my new role.

Will you share an example of something you and your mentee have discussed?

My mentee and I are working to navigate difficult medicine-oriented cases with limited resources.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of being a mentor?

Getting to know the early career person and their journey and struggles at this stage.

What is one thing that you have learned through your time mentoring for MentorVet?

There are similar forces and challenges for all of us no matter what stage of career we are in!

What is the best piece of advice that you have ever received from a mentor or the best piece of advice that you have ever given?

Count to 10 and eat lunch.

What are your favorite self-care activities?

Quiet morning coffee and exercise.

Would you recommend volunteering as a mentor for MentorVet to other veterinarians?

Yes!
